Several times during Jesus’ earthly ministry he let his listeners know that in order to follow Him, they would have to pick up and carry their own crosses. This probably didn’t take on real meaning until they watched Jesus literally pick up his cross, on their behalf, as he marched forward towards his own death. The Crucifixion of Jesus
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
