Flipping through the channels of our television sets, one can’t help but notice all of the shows that are centered around various super heroes as their main character(s). It seems like human beings enjoy the idea of someone who has the ability to save us from the evils of the world. As we watch the news and follow the reactions from others on social media, it becomes obvious that our world is a world full of chaos right now. As a result, many of us are glued to the tv, or to the news outlets in the media, or to social media sites where people are arguing their opinions. It is so easy for us as Christians to get caught up in these debates, and to allow the ugliness of what’s going on in our world to fill our own hearts to the point where we begin to take part in it. As we study our text today in the Gospel of John, Jesus is also surrounded by the ugliness of the world, but instead of participating in it, He turns to His Father and prays instead.
